Den making is a really enjoyable activity for children. Children learn the how to create natural debris shelters through first making micro shelters. This allows them to investigate the processes involved on a small scale before moving onto larger designs. Large Tarp shelters can be created in school grounds giving children the opportunity to understand why we make shelters, how to successfully choose a correct site and differences in shelter designs. Den making is an exploratory and experimental activity and children are encouraged to be improvisational in their approach. Children work in groups using rope, tarp, natural materials and a range of tools to develop practical skills whilst also deepening an understanding and appreciation of team work.
